Albertville High School student faces 10 years to life in prison after bringing loaded gun to school
Albertville Student Arrested After Loaded Gun Found in Backpack
An Albertville High School student, Djovani Jean-Pierre, was arrested on Monday after a loaded firearm was discovered in his backpack. The incident began when the 16-year-old left school around 9 a.m., returning later for football practice. Acting on a tip regarding a possible weapon, school resource officer Gilbert Lucero confronted Jean-Pierre, who attempted to flee. Lucero used a taser twice to subdue him, during which a school administrator found the weapon in the student’s bag.
Police revealed in a press conference that Jean-Pierre allegedly stole the gun early that morning from a victim in Arab. Officials confirmed that he had no intention of using the weapon on campus. He now faces serious charges, including first-degree robbery, second-degree assault, and minor in possession of a weapon, which are set to be heard in adult court.
Marshall County District Attorney Jennifer Bray emphasized the gravity of the situation, noting that the theft and possession charges could lead to sentences ranging from 10 years to life if convicted. Albertville City Schools Superintendent Bart Reeves reiterated the district’s zero-tolerance policy on violence or threats, urging parents to discuss the seriousness of making threats, even in jest, with their children. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have indicated that additional arrests may follow related to the firearm theft.
